Irish Notes 16th June 04.

James Stafford, driving a 1600 Corsa, scored a memorable win on his home Wexford MC Scaville Lodge Single Stage Rally last weekend. Stafford finished the three runs over a ten mile asphalt stage 10 secs ahead of the 2 litre Corsa of Alan Doherty, with James Coleman in his Escort 3rd, a further 21 secs back.


Long time Metro 6R4 exponent Denis Biggerstaff has switched to a Subaru Impreza WRC. The former Rallycross and NI Rally Champion from Kinallen drove the car to 6th on last Saturday’s Mourne Rally.


Letterkenny’s Shaun Gallagher is seeded at 3 on his home Shell Donegal International Rally this weekend, behind Andrew Nesbitt and Austin McHale, and ahead of Tarmac Champion Derek McGarrity. Gallagher is listed to drive an Impreza WRC but has reportedly clinched a deal to drive a Saxo Super 1600 being brought over from Belgium.


The legendary pairing of Cahal Curley/Austin Frazer, who achieved the Tarmac Grand Slam in 1974 of winning the Circuit of Ireland, Donegal and the Manx, driving a Porsche Carrera, are competing together again on this Donegal event, starting at No.65. Cahal’s son Conor, with Austin’s son Nigel, co-driving, are competing as well, also in an Escort and seeded at No.70.


Well known competitors Maurice and Kenny Gass, sponsors of last weekend’s Mourne Rally, were the driving force behind raising in excess of £11,000. for the Newry Hospice through the rally and a barbecue/ auction afterwards.
Last week we mentioned North Armagh Motor Club holding a rally on the 3rd July, this is in Loughgall Country Park.
