IRISH NOTES 15th March 2004
The Ford of Ireland Ka Championship kicks off with the 28th March Tipperary Forestry Rally. The Pirelli supported series sports 12 drivers this year, including young Gordon Coleman and Brian O'Mahony, sons of famous rally men Billy and Frank.
Kenny McKinstry intends to have another go at winning the Manx National this year, the Banbridge man having been close to victory several times in recent years until bad luck intervened.
The 27th June Ravens Rock Rally is moving from Kilkenny back to its Waterford base. Ann-Marie Fitzgerald will again be Clerk of the Course. The rally will be based in what was Jurys Hotel, now the McEniff Ard Ri Hotel.
Cahal Arthurs has acquired the Hyundai Accent WRC used by Shane Braniff on last weekend's West Cork Rally. Cahal plans to make a serious bid for the Dunlop National Rally Championship title this year. First round is the Circuit of Kerry on 4th April.
London based Limerick man Ollie O'Donovan and also Maynooth's Kevin Barrett are taking their respective Subarus to the Zuider Zee Rally in Holland this weekend, a round of the Dutch Rally Championship.
The Skibbereen Single Stage scheduled for 25th April is based at the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery with parc ferme at Leap Racecourse.
Tarmac Champion Derek McGarrity, winner of the opening round at Kirkistown 2 weeks ago, is the No.1 seed for this Saturday's Bishopscourt Stages, round 2 of the Northern Ireland Championship. Gary White (Escort Cosworth). James Gillen (Subaru): Denis Biggerstaff (Metro 6R4): Kieran Shaw and Kevin Lynch in Subaru WRCs are the top 6 seeds.
