Irish Notes 5th Jan 2005.

Comber's Ernest McMillen, still a current and successful stage competitor, was awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours List. Ernest has been at the forefront of rallying for 5 decades. It was actually for his work in the Pony Club that Ernest was awarded his honour, but that does not detract from the goodwill it has generated amongst his many motorsport friends.

Philip Morrow, rated as one of NI's best young drivers, has been clocking up some test miles at Sweet Lamb in his GpN Lancer Evo6 to accustom himself to a new dog box, in preparation for this year's Mitsubishi Evo Challenge.

For the third year the Fisher Foundation has granted its rally safety awards, with each of the four recipients, The Ulster Automobile Club, The Donegal Motor Club, Athlone Rally Rescue and Cookstown's Motorsport Marshalling Partnership appreciative of the contribution towards upgrading their rescue and safety equipment.

The Titanic Super Special, introduced for the first time in December 2003, and featuring a stage in the heart of Belfast, is to be run again, this time on the 26th & 27th February. The event will be backed this time by Meteor Electrical, who is also sponsoring the Circuit of Ireland. Niall McShea has agreed to compete.

Dublin's George Tracey switched from his Peugeot 206 WRC to his Metro 6R4 to good effect by winning the popular post Christmas Mondello Rallysprint. Last year's winner Kevin Barrett was just a second in arrears to take runner up spot, with Kenny McKinstry, also in a Subaru WRC, 3rd.

Monaghan's Damien Connolly is to co-drive a full programme on this year's World Rally Championship for Anthony Warmbold in a Focus WRC. Damien normally co-drives for Glen Allen, so this will be quite a new challenge for him.

Martin Doherty took his ex Bertie Fisher Impreza 555 to the narrowest of victories on the Maiden City MC's Turkey Run stages rally over Kieran Graffin in his Lancer. The rally, with 6 stages through Aghadowey, was run in atrocious weather conditions. Terry McGonagle was 3rd in an ex Aaron McHale Lancer, while Tony McDaid won the 2wd section in an Escort.

Regards, Brian Patterson.
