IRISH
NOTES 9TH MAY 07
Guy Wilks and his co-driver Phil Pugh are scheduled to compete
on this weekend’s Cork Forestry Moonraker Rally, a round
of the Hankook Southern Forestry Championship. Guy’s
trip has been instigated by Frank O’Mahony to support
the Championship, and the organisers, the Munster Motor Cycle
and Car Club. One of the principal backers behind the Wilks
trip is Dermot Hanafin through his Motorsport Insurance Services
business.
The Moonraker is based in Midleton, near Cork City, and the
top Championship regulars entered include Stephen Moore, Kevin
O’Kane and young Keith Cronin. Emma McKinstry
is still undecided whether to appear in an Impreza WRC or
her regular GpN Lancer. The entry level has been affected
because Carlow is on the same day, so there are entry spaces
available.
This weekend’s Carlow Rally is a round of the Dunlop
National Championship, and has attracted the regular top competitors
including Michael Barrable, Ray Breen, Glenn Allen, Aaron
MacHale, Noel Redmond and Patrick Elliott. The event is always
extremely popular anyway, and also has a high profile Escort
Mk2 Challenge which is creating huge interest and has boosted
the entry level, making for a very big reserve list.
Top seeds the Carlow Mk2 Challenge are Gwyndaf Evans, Billy
Coleman, Willie Whitty, Seamus O’Connell, Camillus Bradley
and Wesley Patterson.
The prestigious Killarney Silver Wheel Award was presented
to Doctors Matthew & Penny Short in recognition of their
services to Irish rallying.
The 9th June Mourne Rally, a round of the NI Rally Championship
and the Border series has a new sponsor in the shape of Modern
Tyre Services. The event will again utilise the tarmac roads
through the Camlough and Gullion forest complex.
The North Armagh Motorcycle and Car club along with the Armagh
Lions Club have announced that they have received an entry
from Bjorn Waldegard to drive his original 1977 Ford Escort
RS1800 Safari wining car on the Festival of Motorsport Loughgall
Country Park Rally on Saturday 2nd June. There are also
entries from Tony Fall in an original works Mini cooper S,
Scotland’s Ivor Clark in a BRM Avenger, Billy Coleman
in an Escort RS1800 and Adrian Boyd in an Renault Alpine.
