Irish Notes 14th May 2007.

James M Stafford took his Darrian to maximum 023 Tiles Southern Four Championship points in winning the National section of the Killarney Rally of the Lakes, while Wesley Patterson in his Escort now leads the points overall, with Kevin O’Donoghue and Kevin Kelleher 2nd and 3rd in their Lancers.

Former Ulster Rally winner Derek Boyd, now resident on the Isle of Man, made a comeback to rallying on last weekend’s RSSI Manx Rally, driving a hired Raymond Mason Lancer Evo 9. Boyd found the Friday night tough going, but got on the pace on the Saturday. He plans to compete on the Shell Donegal, with his daughter Roisin co-driving.

Todd Falvey took his Porsche to a crushing victory on the Historic section of the Killarney Rally of the Lakes, setting times on a par with the 3rd and 4th quickest on the National section. This is the 3rd year in a row that Falvey has taken the win in his Mulvihillmedia.com backed 911, which has now finished 14 rallies out of 15 starts. Denis Moynihan was 2nd, Don Moynihan 3rd, both in Escorts, with Adrian Kermode 4th in his Porsche and  Sean Tracey 5th in his Alpina BMW.

Monaghan Motor Club has announced that it is all stations go for their 10th June Forestry Rally, which will be round 5 of the  Hankook Tyres Forestry series. The event will be based in Threemilehouse and will have 7 stages at Dartry, Knockatallan and Esh. There was a certain amount of doubt over whether the rally would run, because of worries over bird nesting.

Two high profile crews, Ray Breen/Damien Morrissey and Noel Redmond/Ger Healy were refused a start on Carlow Rally, last weekend, for an alleged breach of the recconnaissance regulations. This follows the introduction by Motorsport Ireland some time ago of cameras on stages during the period leading up to events.

This weekend’s Sperrins Rally, a round of the NI Championship, has attracted a high class entry led by last year’s winner Charlie Donnelly in a Corolla WRC. The Sperrins switched from forest to asphalt stages a couple of years ago and this has certainly not dented the event’s popularity. Based in Walsh’s Hotel Maghera, the event sports a maximum 120 car entry, with top championship contenders Glenn Allen, Sean Devine and Stephen Moore in their various WRC machinery.

Top Irish drivers on the provisional list for next week’s  Jim Clark are Eugene Donnelly at 1, followed by Eamonn Boland, Tim McNulty and Kevin Lynch. Gareth Jones is listed just outside the top ten in his Focus WRC, with  Greg Shinnors co-driving. Greg however is stepping down, saying that they are still the best of friends, but that the notes just weren’t ‘clicking’. Phillip Morrow is listed at 16, followed by top Irish GpN drivers Seamus Leonard, Colm Murphy, Roy White, James Cullen, Connor McCloskey and Kevin O’Donoghue.
