Damp slippy conditions greeted the drivers on the opening stage, Woodcock Hill on this Clare Stages Rally. Patrick Elliott was fastest on the 11.8km opening test over the top of the mountain outside Sixmilebridge although Patrick said at stage finish. “We were being very conservative”.

Charlie Donnelly was next along in his Corolla and he said. “It was very slippy but we settled in nicely, this man Darren beside me is doing well on the notes”.

It was thought that Aaron MacHale, 3rd on the road, would have set a scorching time but Aaron was another to report conditions very slippy and he was just being a bit careful.

Tim McNulty found his Subaru very bouncy, but otherwise OK.

Denis Cronin said he made a “very cautious start”.

Sean Gallagher finished the stage on a time of 7.11, a damaged front left wheel on his Subaru evidence of being in the verge, possibly happening when he squeezed past the struggling Niall Maguire. Niall’s Subaru was going slowly at that point, and then never reached the stage finish. Kevin Barrett reported that Niall was parked half way through the stage.

In Group N as can be seen above it was Alan Ring who was setting the pace from Ian Barrett. Barrett reckons he lost quite a few seconds when his Impreza slipped off the road briefly.

Anthony O’Halloran was the first of the 2 wheel drive men over the stage, Anthony reported “No grip whatsoever”. His Manta stopped the clocks on 7.14.
