Kevin Lynch, co-driven by Francis Regan today, has brought his KPL Focus WRC into a very impressive win, 8s up on Mark Higgins in his Subaru with Kenny McKinstry 3rd in his Subaru. There were all sorts of last minute dramas in the pouring rain here at Lurgan Park. Charlie Donnelly had made a big charge through stage 6 to get his Corolla into 3rd place and we presume he was having another charge through the final stage but put the Toyota off into the trees. Unfortunately Dickie Curran also crashed, his Lancer going off the road at the final chicane.

For Kevin Lynch this was his 4th victory here in Lurgan Park, the Dungiven man commenting. “It was a matter of getting the set up of the car right, it was difficult in the conditions but then when we switched into the gravel mode we found the speed, got ahead and we weren’t going to let Mark beat us on the final stage. It was a case of knowing when to hold ‘em and knowing when to fold ‘em!” British Rally Champion Mark Higgins said. “I’m very disappointed not to have won, we had a safe run at the end, nothing silly, there was no point taking chances because we could never have pulled back the time after the accident”. Kenny McKinstry commented that he tried slick tyres at the end and was amazed that they worked well, also said “We had to try something to beat Donnelly”. Unbeknown to Kenny of course Charlie’s Corolla was off the road. For James Gillen it was a great result today, James saying “I’ve been out of rallying for a year and it makes a big difference so I’m pleased with this.”

Garry Jennings won group N in his Lancer, the Kesh man saying “That’s my 3rd group N in a row and this is the sweetest, because it was such a difficult day and with Niall McShea in a group N car as well. I was sleeping early on and got it all together as the day progressed”. Niall McShea was 2nd group N and said. “I enjoyed it, we had a grand run, I should have prepared better, but then we only knew at 8 o’clock last night I’d be driving this car”. Young Michael Curran was 7th o/a and 3rd group N and he more or less took the attitude that as conditions got more difficult that he wasn’t prepared to take too many risks. John McKeown had a good run to 8th place. Richard Hogg was battling with James Gillen for 4th and 5th places but he spun his Skoda and dropped to 9th o/a while Derek McGeehan came into 10th.

Nigel Worswick was 11th and said at the finish. “I tried my best”. But Nigel and his co driver Clive Molyneaux had no chance of making up the time lost after the massive spin.

Stage 7 has now been stopped following Dickie Curran’s accident and we Darren Gass will be adjudged the winner of class 2, Darren Citroen finishing just ahead of the Escort of Wesley Patterson. Martin Teggart will almost certainly be 3rd in cl.2 in his Escort. John McKeown has won cl.3 from Nigel Worswick with Brian Dowey 3rd.

Finally for now well done to William Fullerton, Barry Taggart and all the hard working team from the N.Armagh MC & Car Club. BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON www.rallynews.net
