John McCarthy and co driver Dan Maguire were pleased as punch as they scored an unchallenged victory on this years Willie Loughman Memorial Rally. McCarthy who only recently switched to his Impreza has been threatening to win a round of the forestry championship for some time, and today he led from the start to score his first ever rally victory.

Eddie Kinirons drove an almost perfect rally to finish a fantastic second, he and co driver Greg Shinnors struggled without a handbrake in their Celica, this result a fine starter for their KBB Doors Forestry Championship campaign. Garry Jennings drove superbly in the little 106 Maxi, but was lucky to make the finish when the rear suspension had totally collapsed over the final stage, another indication of just how good this young driver is.

Kevin O’Kane was competitive for the whole rally and had a trouble free run to fourth, while Dermot Kelly solved his mechanical worries to set fastest time over stage nine, enough to secure him sixth overall. It was heartbreak though for Paul Staunton, the Escort driver holding a top five place before the final stage only to get a puncture and loose almost five minutes, dropping him out of the top ten. P J O’Connor was another looking for a top ten finish, but the Sierra Cosworth driver has failed to appear at the final control.

Gareth McHale was another driver to suffer suspension woes in his 206, but once again the young Dublin driver did a good job to bring his ailing machine home just outside the top ten. Vivienne Noone led the Ford KAs after stage seven, Eoin Fogarty in second, Chadwick third and Martin Laverty in fourth. In the classes Lloyd Hutchinson has had another storming run in his mini and looks like he is the class victor, finishing just off the leaderboard.

Well done once again to Carrick On Suir Motor Club on another great Willie Loughman Rally and to COC George Clancey for keeping it all under control in his usual demanding style.
