The big news in from stage 10 Lough Bo
is that Eugene Donnelly and co driver Paul Kiely have crashed the Envirocare
Subaru heavily. Both are out of the car and displaying the OK board,
reportedly the damage is fairly extensive. Following drivers such as Eamonn
Boland and Andrew Nesbitt lost a few seconds slowing down to make absolutely
sure that the crew were unhurt. Fastest through the stage was Derek McGarrity,
Andrew Nesbitt was just over a second slower, next up was Austin MacHale, but
he was nearly 20s back on the leader. Derek reported no problems, Nesbitt was
a wee bit worried about his brakes. Further down the list, Maurice Gass had
another stall at stage start and lost a few seconds. Tim McNulty had a big
spin and there was front end damage, but Tim was a lot happier than earlier,
the mechanics had changed his Impreza suspension and he said it was
"fantastic".
In Group N Seamus Leonard was fastest,
just half a second up on Roy White, Shaun Gallagher was a further 3s back,
Dickie Curran a further 9 back. Roy reckons he lost maybe 5s slowing at Eugene’s
accident. Seamus Leonard had his turbo problems sorted, it turns out it was a
pipe had come adrift, Seamus commenting "We’ve a lot of work to do to
catch Roy". Still on the gpN theme….Tony Kearns was way back in the
twenties overnight. He has changed to different tyres and jumped to 14th
after 2 stages this morning. Aaron MacHale has also speeded up and he has
jumped from the twenties to 15th.
Willie John Dolan has retired his gpN
Impreza – it was jumping out of 3rd gear yesterday, today he lost
4th and 5th. Sean Cassidy and Martina damaged the
suspension on their Escort Cosworth late on Saturday, they have replaced a
back strut and the car is "all over the place". Brian Durnien in the
beautiful blue and white Mk2 flattened the exhaust on Arigna and is losing a
bit of time. Martin Howley in the Lancer had 2 spins on Arigna. Cathal Rogers
is still holding a position in the top 20 and the ex Eugene Donnelly G3
Escort, and that is despite burning the rubber off on the first run through
Arigna. Pat White’s Impreza WRC blew a manifold gasket on Arigna, Pat saying
"Every stage brings a new problem".
Paul Barrett in the Mk2 Escort, lying
inside the top 30, lost a minute in Arigna with a broken throttle cable.
Aisling Dooris continues to lead the Ladies category but reckons she went just
a little too handy over this morning’s gravel stages. Lucy Ford-Hutchinson
is 2nd Lady, still going well but reports the Micra pulling badly
to one side. Young Michael Curran is nicely placed at 16th in his
gpN Lancer. Jim Crozier was in the top 20 but seems to have disappeared in
stage 9, reason as yet unknown. Andrew Stewart did not appear with the front
cars through 10, was attempting a gearbox change at service. More news later. BRIAN
AND LIZ PATTERSON (with thanks to Michael Patterson & Zoe Todd.
