The consensus of opinion amongst the top drivers was that the stage was slippier than expected following some overnight rain.  Although the sun was out over the crisp West Cork countryside as the first cars started stage 1, Kilcoe, there was still a fair bit of dampness about. Even Kenny McKinstry, fastest on this opening test, said "We were very cautious, very slippy".  Michael Barrable reported all well, but again slippy. Melvyn Evans, 3rd on the road in his new Subaru, reported the car to be darting about.  Ollie O'Donovan commented "Two moments on shiny tar".

Pete Doughty reported some smoke coming into his Escort WRC, while Denis Cronin was more than pleased to have made a quick start for a change.  Cahal Arthurs felt that his Celica was virtually undriveable, it was bouncing about so much.  Several other drivers in the same boat, not happy with their cars handling including John Dalton and Damian Cole, both in Darrians. Tony Davies, out for the first time in the ex Melvyn Evans Subaru, was slowed when his front screen misted up.

In Group N the first 2 times we have in are for Kieran O'Callaghan and Willie Fannin and they were equal on 8.51.  O'Callaghan reported a stall on the start line, an overshoot and also had to pass Don Butler who had spun.  Willie Fannin also reported a big slide on at a junction and lost some time.

Outside this Fastnet Rally Ireland has won at the Rugby World Cup 16 - 15. In Cataluyna WRC Richard Burns has gone off the road and is out of the event, which will almost certainly spell the end of his world championship aspirations for this year. Loeb still leads after stage 19, it is raining in Sjpain, Panizzi is 2nd then Martin, Sainz, Duval and Solberg. Kris Meeke/Chris Patterson are 2nd in the Junior World championship in his Corsa from Tirabassi.  On the Tempest Rally Ling leads the Peugeot 206s from Chris Moore with Gareth McHale a close 3rd.  Garry Jennings survived a bodywork damaging excursion to lead the Super 1600 category from Leon Pesticcio.  More news on the Fastnet after SS2.
