There was drama on the very final stage of this Fastnet Rally when Kenny McKinstry's Subaru ground to a halt at a junction to allow Michael Barrable through to sin, Liam McCarthy 2nd and Patrick Elliott 3rd. McKinstry had been leading the rally all day, but going into the last stage had reported his Subaru oil pressure light flashing.  The engine did grind to a halt.  It was a surprised and delighted Michael Barrable who coasted down to the main road outside Rosscarbery with the thumbs up, and a broad smile on.  As Michael emerged from his Subaru he said "I can hardly believe it. I always said this stage was a sting in the tail. I must say I enjoyed the day, I'm very glad to be back on the pace towards the end".

Interestingly, Michael's co driver Dermot O'Gorman is the Champion co-driver for the 023 Tiles Championship.  Liam McCarthy is the new driver champion.  For O'Gorman it has been a remarkable year - he has won the Tarmac Championship, the Dunlop National Championship and now the 023 Tiles Southern 4. Liam McCarthy finished runner up today and as we said above the new 023 Tiles Champion. Liam remarking "A good rally, a good day". Third placed Patrick Elliott echoed those thoughts, going on to say "We stalled the car at the start of a stage just before the end otherwise we might have been runner up".  The gap between 2nd and 3rd at the end was just 7s.

Further dramas on that last stage apart from McKinstry was that Pete Doughty, lying 5th starting the test in his Escort WRC, spun the car and ended up facing the wrong way. He managed to shuffle the car into a farmyard. Meanwhile his co driver Lyn Jenkins had run back up the road to slow the following cars. He wasn't quite in time to stop Denis Cronin, who laughed afterwards.."That's 2 stages today where I've had a car blocking my way".  Doughty managed to get going eventually, but finished outside the leaderboard on a total of 1.10.44 and very little damage to the car. John Dalton finished best 2 wheel drive car in his Darrian just ahead of Cronin's BMW. James O'Sullivan won cl.13 in his Escort and finished just outside the leaderboard on 1.08.39. Willie Fannin took Group N from Kieran O'Callaghan.   Steve Fleck has won the Get Connected Championship.

Finally for now many thanks to Donnacha Hayes and all his team for putting on such a splendid event and helping us with the RallyNews. Thanks as well to Seanie & Theresa & Michele of the Marine Hotel who have looked after everyone so well. BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON     www.rallynews.net
