Interestingly the top drivers reported the stage to be more
slippy through the 2nd stage than the 1st despite the roads
drying out. Sean Gallagher was 4s slower than his
first time, Pat Donegal was 7s slower, Mike Quinn was 4
slower. Tom Randles managed to improve by 1s but still stays
in 4th place. When Sean Gallagher's ex John
Gilleece Escort Cosworth came to a halt here at the service
area beside the beautiful beach here at Ballyheige Sean
reported "We went alright, definitely slippier,
chicanes tighter2. Sean Lyons, hotly in the running
for the Top Part West Coast championship, clipped the
chicane and lost a few seconds. John Kearney hit the chicane
on the first stage, has discovered now that the steering
rack is slightly bent and the car is breaking away in 5th
gear. Peter Clifford stalled his Impreza at the hairpin.
Mike Quinn's Escort had a wet plug at the stage start and
misfired for the first part of the stage. Ray
Hilliard's Lancer was coughing and spluttering towards stage
finish, very low in petrol. Donal O'Flaherty lost several
minutes when his Escort got stuck at the chicane.
Christy Carey was another to lose time at the very tight
hairpin left, Christy saying that he has a manual reverse
gear in his Subaru - half a dozen guys tipped off to stand
at the hairpin and push him back - in fact he has no reverse
gear at all!! Dominic Naughton is leading class 6 in
his Peugeot. Jason Costello was coming into the top 10 in
his Sunbeam after the first stage, got a fright in stage 2
and backed off. Paudie Casey and Sinead O'Keefe in the
Peugeot 309 lost several minutes when the gears disappeared
completely. Martin French was towed into service
having retired. Declan Tracy has retired his Astra with
clutch troubles. Paul McCann is still gong but his
Escort Cosworth is well down the list, and Aidan Walsh is
also still going, again well down the order, no indication
of how he stands just yet. Paddy O'Reilly is driving a gpN
BMW and lost some time when the throttle came adrift. More
news after stage 3. BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON
