Main story from the second loop of stages here in Mayo is that National Champion Niall Maguire emerged from stage 5 with his Subaru misfiring. He has not appeared here at service after stage 6 so we can only presume he has retired - although we do not know for sure. Eugene Donnelly had a good run through stages 4, 5 and 6 to maintain his lead, by setting fastest time on every stage so far. Eugene is reporting some transmission smoke and a little waywardness from the differential. Philip Shaw has retired his Mk2 Escort with a broken gearbox and James Gillen, 7th after stage 3, has also disappeared.  Glenn Allen was running late, his Escort Cosworth suffering some turbo trouble. Shaun Gallagher is leading his class, but his Peugeot is crunching the gears a little, a synchro ring perhaps gone faulty. Second placed Michael Barrable reports no real problems. Charlie Donnelly's Celica is still having power steering problems, Charlie is topping the reservoir up himself between stages and it is not too bad.

Seamus Leonard continues to lead gpN and is up to 4th overall, Seamus flying on some stages but struggling on others for lack of grip.  Kieran Shaw found the in-car camera interfering with his intercom, disconnected the camera, fitted intermediate tyres, and is going a whole lot better. Jim Harrison went off the road on the same corner on stage 6 as he went off on on stage 3 - oh dear! Adrian McElvaney reported a misfire on his Subaru in stage 4, now sorted and going well.  Sean Gallagher clipped the front right corner of his ex Gilleece Escort Cosworth, his pride taking as much of a hit as the car.

Aaron McHale is setting some respectable times to hold on to 2nd in gpN, but he's had 2 spins at square corner junctions which haven't helped his cause. Derek Jobb has clipped a bale with a front left guard of his Lancer, otherwise OK. Michael Shaw has been off the road on SS5, still going, but slowly. Andrew Stewart still going, but back in the order. More later. BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON                         www.rallynews.net
