Fastest man over the Kilmacilloge and Tim Healy stages was Eugene Donnelly, his
forest experience and undoubted ability on slippy roads really coming to the
fore. On stage 2, Kilmacilloge, Eugene recorded a time of 5.49.5. Derek
McGarrity 5.56.9, Austin MacHale 5.59.2. Liam McCarthy 5.58.7 and early leader
Donie O'Sullivan 5.59.8. Tom the Tim Healy Pass Eugene Donnelly scored
6.09.1. Derek McGarrity 6.10.7. Donie O'Sullivan 6.16.8. Here on the road
towards Castletownbere at service in the rain is now streaming down, all the
drivers thinking they were on the wrong tyres, Austin MacHale saying "The
car's floating, there's now standing water." However, as one of the
later runners, John Hickey in his Celica said "Sure maybe there was maybe
never a tyre made for this at all!"
In Group N Trevor Cathers continues to hold sway, although Andrew Stewart was a
second and a half faster than the Subaru man over the Tim Healy. Roy White
has dropped out of the equation somewhat, his FESP backed Lancer running short
on fuel, Roy having to put in ordinary pump petrol and consequently drive very
conservatively to save the engine, not a happy young man. Trevor Cathers
remarked that he is still getting used to the car and taking no chances.
While Andrew Stewart looks like he is going to make a real fight of this.
Peadar Hurson is lying just outside the top 10, solely because he has a 1m20s
road penalty, his Impreza WRC's electronic device thingymajig to the gear lever
didn't like this wet weather when it came out of Killarney parc ferme.
Dutch visitor Chris Vlaar is going very nicely in his gpN Lancer on a total
24.44.3 and reports no problems. Jer O'Donovan in the Escort Cosworth is going
backwards, the car is cutting out and stopping, plus the wipers are not working.
Denis Cronin is the best of the 2 wheel drive runners so far, his BMW M3 on a
total of 24.24.6. Denis reporting the car a real handful in these
conditions.
Some other times include - Aaron MacHale on 24.28.8, Dickie Curran on 24.24.1.
Paddy White going very nicely 25.02.8. Tom Holton with visibility problems in
his Celica 25.25.9. Eamonn Boland still recovering from his puncture, 27.09.0.
More later. BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON
