Through the 11.53 miles of Lough Allua Eugene Donnelly turned in a stunning
performance to move into the lead of this Killarney Rally of the Lakes.
Lough Allua, which means Lake of the Swans or Swan Lake, is no place for ballet
dancing in a car - it's tough, fast and unforgiving. Although the rain has now
stopped, the roads are still wet, and it must have been quite a trip for
Eugene's co driver Paul Kiely. Eugene's time for the stage was 9.50.9. Derek
McGarrity 9.57.8. Austin MacHale 10.00.0. Eamonn Boland had a good time of
10.05.1, but Eamonn is still well over 3 minutes behind the leaders. Liam
McCarthy recorded 10.04.1 and Donie O'Sullivan 10.08.4.
News of further retirements includes Peadar Huron's Impreza WRC having stopped
again at service with further ECU problems. Peadar is having no luck with
his new car as yet. Dermot Hanafin and co driver Mike Gibson in the Fitz Samuel
Insurance Impreza also stopped at Glengariff service. The car seemed OK
when it came in, but when they re-started it again to go out to Lough Allua
there was a knocking noise started. End of story for the genial Dermot.
Ford Ireland Focus Challenge - After stage 6 John Foley led by 20s from Colm
Murphy with Oliver Stanley 3rd a further 34s back, Gabriel Martin 4th.
Murphy had been leading earlier but his car shed it's belts and Colm had to stop
and fix the problem himself, incurring 6 minutes road penalties.
Some more leaderboard times - Maurice Gass is on a total of 1.05.06.7. Johnny
O'Sullivan, now with 4 working driveshafts 1.07.28.4. Paddy White 1.07.35.0.
Roy White 1.07.33.3. Still waiting for times for Dickie Curran, Andrew
Stewart and 2 wheel drive leader Denis Cronin.
More news later. BRIAN AND LIZ PATTERSON
