First of the forest stages, Stape Hill, stage 4, brought some changes to the
leaderboard. Marcus Dodd retained his position at the front and Steve Hendy
held on to 2nd, although Hendy was to hit problems on a later stage when he
put his Escort Cosworth briefly on to its side. David Mann changed his
suspension at service and moved from 5th to 3rd through the forest stage.
Raymond Munro dropped back slightly from 4th to 5th and Andy Burton found the
sort of form that saw him win the Wyedean. Burton goes OK on the
tarmac, but not nearly as well as he does on the gravel. Mark
Perrott also got his finger out through the forest stage and moved up the
order from 7th to 4th.
In Group N Mike Brown moved into the lead from Richard Davis, both in
Mitsubishi Lancers. Brown was saying that he has only ever driven cars
that he has built himself. He bought this car recently fully prepared and he
still hasn't got total confidence in it.
Unofficially we have Brown 11th overall and Davis 12th. Phil Morgan in 13th
in his Subaru WRC. Ollie O'Donovan 14th in his Subaru and Gary Midwinter 15th
despite his gearbox problems.
In the Peugeot Winter Cup, young Ulster driver Philip Morrow was leading
after stage 3, 6s up on Martin Evans with Stuart Jones 3rd a further 7s back.
Favourites for the Winter cup title which will be decided today, Richard
Sykes and Leon Pesticcio are not doing so well so far. Sykes spun on
the first stage when he forgot to alter his 206 brake bias from the forest
settings, and Leon Pesticcio is feeling distinctly unwell.
Looking further afield from this Rallye Sunseeker - Eugene Donnelly is
leading the first round of the NI Championship at Kirkistown, Philip Shaw is
2nd, Denis Biggerstaff 3rd and Trevor Moore 4th. Kenny McKinstry, who won the
Sunseeker last year, tells us that his daughter Emma is doing Kirkistown (her
first event) and she is lying 3rd in class in her Peugeot 206. Emma seems to
be just like her father - shows no fear and flat out at everything!!
