IRISH
NOTES 28TH OCTOBER 2002
Robbie
McGurk
is a surprise entry for this Saturday's Toshiba Rally, final
round of the NI Championship through the Co. Antrim forests.
Derek McGarrity has already been crowned series winner, but would
be keen to renew his rivalry with the Omagh man. McGurk is
hiring one of McKinstry's Subarus.
The
Toshiba Rally
is based in Ballymena's TullyGlass Hotel beside County Hall.
The action starts at 9am with the finish planned for 4.30pm.
Service is in Glenariff. Stages include Slieveanorra and
Ballyboley.
Killarney's
Donie O'Sullivan
is in the process of selling his new model Prodrive prepared GpN
Subaru Impreza, and is acquiring Michael Walsh's Mk2 Escort.
Donie plans to do the Killarney Historic/Classic Rally in
December and overall intends just to rally for fun.
Ollie
O'Donovan
is another planning to get away from 4 wheel drive, the London
based Limerick man resurrecting his Ford RS2000 F2 car for next
year.
Killybegs
man Stuart Darcy
has acquired Adrian McElvaney's Mitsubishi Lancer and has
forsaken all thoughts of the Ford Puma 1600. Stuart, the
current Billy Coleman Award winner, was immediately on the pace
in the gpN Lancer.
Jer
O'Donovan
debuted a new Dominic McNeill built Escort WRC on last Sunday's
Fastnet Rally, the Bentry man using the rally as a shake down
with the intention of competing on next year's Tarmac
Championship.
The
North East MC
is running a single stage event this Sunday based in
Carrickmacross. Clerk of the Course Tom Taafe reports a full
entry, with Philip Shaw the No.1 seed followed by Norman
Armstrong, both in Escorts. Mick McArdle is at 3 in a rear wheel
drive Peugeot 205. The action starts at 9am from the Oasis Hotel.
Monaghan's
John Kelly
(Corolla TC) has won the Border Championship. His normal
co-driver Mark Tierney misses out on the co-driver's title, that
goes to Noel Hall who normally sits with Trevor Lancashire, but
the pair crashed out of last week's Donegal Harvest Rally.
Damien
Connolly
who normally co drives for Aaron McHale and guided him to gpN
victory on the Dunlop National series, sat in with Martin Brady
on the Fastnet Rally which enabled him to take the gpN co-drivers
title. Damien has also been co driving in the Middle East this
year, for Achmed Sabban in a Lancer Evo7.
