NOTES 27.02.02
Well
known co-driver Michael Gibson, in an effort to put something
back into the sport, is introducing a NI Scholarship to assist
one driver, who will be selected by a press panel, to further
their rally career. Along with top drivers Richard Hogg and
Fintan McGrady the Scholarship will consist of driver days at the
Higgins rally school, promotion and an assisted drive in a 4wd
car.
Gibson
himself is looking at a busy year, sitting alongside Mark Higgins
in the USA, the pair testing a new Hyundai in a week or two,
while he is also down to sit with Neil Simpson in a WRC car on
the Pirelli BRC, plus many ‘one offs’.
Brendan
Kelly is taking
delivery soon of a new Lancer Evo 7 from David Greer Motorsport
and with Rory Kennedy co-driving plans to do the Mayo Stages in
preparation for an attempt at the Circuit of Ireland.
Munster MC & C C has
announced that well respected co driver Hugh McPhillips will be
Clerk of the Course of this October’s Cork 20 International.
Liam O’Callaghan, Frank O’Mahony and Brian Curtin will
act as deputies, ensuring the strongest management team possible
for the penultimate Toshiba Tarmac Championship counter.
Driver/car
changes over the last
week include Glen Allen acquiring Tommy Graham’s Escort WRC to
contest the NI Championship, Brian McCloskey getting a ex works
Escort WRC which will be changed from left to right hand drive,
the KBB Doors director using his existing GpA Escort Cosworth in
the meantime.
Ballymena’s
Nigel Hicklin has
bought Ray Breen’s Subaru and plans to contest the Get
Connected series starting with West Cork.
The Southern 4
Championship is now
being sponsored by James O’Sullivan’s “023 Tiles”
concern, the counting rounds being – West Cork, Killarney
Lakes, Munster, Wexford and Skibbereen.
