Irish
Notes 1st October 2003.
Cathal Arthurs was the highest of the Irish contingent on last
weekend's Golden Tulip Rally, taking his Celica into 5th. Ollie
O'Donovan was 7th following some gearbox trouble with his Subaru
and Nigel Hicklin was 12th in his Impreza WRC. Barry Coleman was
19th , with Mayo's Killian Duffy co-driving and celebrating his
21st birthday. Focus Championship front runner Colm Murphy was a
creditable 22nd on his first outing in a GpN machine. Tom Holton
crashed out, as did Paddy White, but Navan man White still did
enough to win the West Euro Cup in his Impreza WRC S8.
Clonmel's Roy White thoroughly enjoyed his run through the
Yorkshire Forests on the Trackrod Rally, driving an older model
Lancer hired from Buckley Motorsport. Following this weekend's
Cork '20' Roy, his father Sean and Dom Buckley Snr are heading to
Germany to talk with Mitsubishi there about a new Lancer 8.5 for
next year. Programmes under consideration are the French or
Belgium Championships, or possibly the Evo Challenge.
Next weekend's Donegal Harvest Stages is a round of the Quinn
Group Border Championship as well as the Dunlop Championship.
Monaghan's Enda Keenan is one of the favourites in his Mk 2
Escort, but as the series is class based the winner will not
become clear until the end of the 8 stage Letterkenny based
event. Danny McBride in his Civic and Adrian Fox in his class 10
Escort are also in a strong position regarding the title.
Eugene Donnelly will not be doing this weekend's Cork 20 due to
the non arrival of his expected P2000 Subaru. Eugene
commented after the Bushwhacker Rally "The car is not ready
and I suppose I could hire something but its not what I've
planned. I can't complain, I've had a great year and really
wanted to drive the new car in preparation for next season's
Tarmac Championship". Eugene, who has clinched the
Dunlop National Championship and the NI Rally Championship, went
on to say that he thoroughly enjoyed the run in his brother
Charlie's Celica on the Bushwhacker. Found it reasonably
comfortable coping with left hand drive. Eugene plans to complete
the Dunlop series even though he has the title won, and will
drive Stan Harper's 98 Impreza as he as throughout that series.
He hopes to have his own Celica repaired in time for the final NI
round, the Co. Antrim based Toshiba event.
Enniskillen MC raised £8,500 for the Marie Curie Cancer Trust at
a Ladies Challenge day at St. Angelo airport, Enniskillen last
weekend.
Michael Curran has opted not to compete on the Cork 20 but
instead will tackle the Bulldog Rally. The young Bangor man
took his Lancer to 8th overall on his first gravel outing on the
Bushwhacker Rally.
