Irish
Notes 02.07.03
Keith White took his RWD Escort to victory on last week's Mid
Antrim MC Festival Stages Rally, ahead of Trevor Moore, with John
Donnelly 3rd, both in Escort Cosworths. It was a special win for
White, although in fairness Moore had the upper hand through most
of the stages but suffered a last minute puncture and rod
penalties.
Waterford Subaru dealer Eddie Garry is another Irish driver to
order a new Prodrive Impreza series 9 and he intends to compete
on the Manx International and Cork '20' events.
Michael Gibson was sidelined last year following an injury
sustained in an accident on the Dogleap Stages. He has started
co-driving again with Dermot Hanafin in a GpN Subaru on the
Tarmac series, and hopes to compete with Mark Higgins on the
forthcoming Finland, San Remo and Cataluyna WRC events in the RED
Clio.
The 12th/13th July Sligo Rally, always a popular event with the
Irish competitors, is on an opt year from the Dunlop National
Championship. However the C of C Robert Lyttle reports an
overfull entry including 22 crews entered from the Tarmacadam
Championship, with such top names as Melvyn Evans, Steve Hendy
and David Kynaston.
Garry Jennings was hoping to compete on the Sligo Rally in his
Agip backed Peugeot 106 Maxi but left his entry just a little
late and he can not be accommodated in the 151 strong entry. The
Ballinamallard man is hoping for an entry on the Tipperary
Stonethrowers event.
Oliver Stanley was best of the Ford Ireland Focus Championship
contenders on last Sunday's Ravens Rock Rally, with Gerry Keyes
2nd and David Delaney 3rd. John Foley had led the points starting
the Kilkenny based event, but he broke the selector unit on his
new close ratio gearbox. There have been three different winners
on the three rounds so far, with the next counter being the Sligo
Stages.
Letterkenny's Shaun Gallagher has moved into 2nd on the French
Peugeot 206 Cup despite an accident and a puncture saw him
finishing only 11th on last weekend's Rallye du Rouergeue.
Last year's winner Brian Armstrong is the top seed on this
Saturday's North Armagh MC Loughgall Country Park Rally, with
Norman Armstrong at 2 and Rodney Gilliland at 3, all in Mk 2
Escorts.
West Meath crew Martin Browne and co-driver John Kilmurray are
competing in their Honda Civic on this weekend's Jim Clark as
part of their Circuit of Ireland RallyMaps award. It will be the
crew's first rally foray on mainland UK.
