Irish
Notes 3rd September 03
Wexford man Noel Redmond is moving from an Impreza WRC to an ex
Alister McRae Hyundai WRC and plans to debut the car on his home
Wexford Rally next weekend. At a reception for the Wexford Rally
last Friday evening, Noel explained, "The car has been
updated by MSD to Evo 3.5 specification, we have had a short test
session and so far I'm very pleased with it. So far it is
fabulous"
Top entries for the Wexford event, now called the Crosbie Cedar
Hotel Dick Bailey Stages, include Eamonn Boland, Michael Barrable,
Donie O'Sullivan, Tim McNulty and Melvyn Evans, all in Impreza
WRC's. Steve Hendy is in his Escort WRC while Noel Redmond in his
Hyundai WRC will probably be at 10.
Eugene Donnelly, Ireland's most prolific rally winner this year,
is hoping to take delivery this week of a 2000 Impreza WRC which
he will use on this weekend's Ulster Rally. Eugene has mostly
driven a '98 Impreza WRC this season.
Derek McGarrity was undecided on Monday which Impreza WRC he will
drive this weekend. The Glengormley car dealer is due to take
delivery of an S9 this week, but feels it may be cutting it close
to use on the Ulster and he may opt for a 2002 model.
This weekend's Ulster Rally is a counter in the Ford Ireland
Focus Championship, with Durrow's Oliver Stanley currently
leading the points from Gerry Keyes, with David Delaney 3rd .
Killian Duffy is co-driving for Aaron McHale on this weekend's
Ulster Rally, replacing Damien Connolly. Young Mayo man Killian
is flying out after the Ulster to co-drive for Achmid Al Sabban
on the Rally Syria. Aaron, the current National GpN Champion, is
leading the GpN Tarmac Championship section by 1 point from
Seamus Leonard, with Roy White a further 6 back.
Former Forestry Champion Dermot Kelly is expected to rejoin the
rally fray this weekend on the Killarney Forestry Rally, final
round of the KBB Doors Forestry Championship. Kevin O'Kane
currently leads the points, with Eddie Kinirons, John Shanahan
and Kevin Lynch all in with a chance of taking this year's title.
Early leader John McCarthy, who looked at one point odds on to
take the title, has dropped back following his accident on the
Cork round, but will be trying to finish the Championship with a
flourish.
Castle Motor Club report a full entry for this weekend's Hellfire
Single Stage Rally at the Grover Hotel based event outside
Oldcastle. Tim McNulty in his Impreza WRC is the top seed and
will be trying for a hat-trick of wins.
Punchestown RallyMasters organisers Roran Morgan & Tom Nolan
are already working hard on the 2004 event. It is looking very
positive that the event will take place in July next year, a a
final date depending on some Championship dates being decided.
This year's Motorsports Show, taking place later this year at
Punchestown, will not have access to the track, but will use some
car park areas and the grandstand apron.
