IRISH
NOTES 8.10.03
Kevin Lynch took his Impreza WRC to victory on his home Maiden
City MC's Aghadowey stage event last Saturday. Derek
McGeehan was 2nd and Martin Doherty 3rd.
Gareth McHale non-started the Cork '20', preferring to
concentrate his efforts on finishing this season's Peugeot 206
SuperCup and expressed intent to contest the Cup again next year.
Melvyn Evans was testing the temperature of the Tarmac
Championship waters on last weekend's Cork '20' and intends to 'upspec'
his Impreza WRC for a serious attempt at the Tarmac series next
year.
Cork '20' winner Eamonn Boland was another to commit himself to
the Tarmac Championship next year, the Wexford man determined to
go for the title, particularly now that he is so much more
comfortable in his Impreza WRC now that it is right hand drive.
Forestry GpN Champion John Shanahan retired his Subaru on only
the 2nd stage of the Cork '20' when the turbo failed and the
engine was damaged. Shanahan enjoyed his taste of tarmac rallying
in the car and intends to compete on the Skibbereen Rally next
month. The Glandore based event, on an opt out year from the
National Championship, promises to be a tough affair with five
different stage locations.
Tarmac Championship manager Don Wilmont is working with two
potential sponsors for next year, the Toshiba backing now having
run its course.
A co driver on last weekend's Cork 20 Rally, Jamie Kent, was
critically injured in a stage 2 accident. As we went to press on
Monday Jamie was still on the very critical list and on a life
support machine. 26 year old Jamie from Waterford is highly
respected and liked by his fellow competitors, several of whom,
including Ray Breen, Eddie Garry, Eoin Doyle and Emily O'Mahony,
withdrew from the event on Sunday as they were too upset to
continue. The best wishes of the rally community are with Jamie.
Regards
Brian Patterson
