Notes 15th October 2003
Monaghan’s Enda Keenan won the Quinn Group Border
Championship on last weekend’s Donegal Harvest. Co-driven on
the day by Sean Moriarity, Keenan finished well down the overall
order in his beautiful Mk2 Escort following niggly problems, but
still did enough to win his class. Daniel Conaghan finished 2nd
in the class based series, Adrian Fox 3rd . Liam
McLaughlin was the winning co-driver.
Mark Courtney, co-driven by his brother Michael, concentrated
on just getting his Lancer to the finish of last weekend’s
Donegal Harvest event to win GpN on the Dunlop national
Championship. His main rival Derrick Jobb went out early when his
Lancer turbo blew.
Jamie Kent, the 26 year old co-driver so badly injured on the
Cork ‘20’ is showing positive signs of recovery against all
the odds. Interestingly, on examination it would appear that the
Ka stood up extremely well to the impact. The steering column did
not come across as suspected but moved forward. The seats, belts
and anchorages, plus general cabin area were fairly intact. Jamie’s
head injuries were possibly chiefly as a result of contact with
his own knee.
Charlie McGuckin of MicroCam has produced a special limited
edition McRae Stages tape, personally signed by Colin. All the
funds raised are going to be used to hire a WRC machine for Kris
Meeke to drive on a selected event.
Limerick’s Colm Murphy, who won the Ford Ireland Focus
Championship last year and narrowly missed out this time when a
wishbone snapped on the last Cork ‘20’ stage, is switching to
a GpN Subaru. The 2002 specification Impreza will be run by
McKinstry Motorsport. The 29 year old, who tried GpN on the
recent Tulip Rally in Holland and couldn’t believe the grip
levels, is competing at Punchestown this weekend and then
Skibereen, with the overall intention of contesting the Tarmac
Championship in 2004.
Cork’s Emily O’Mahony is moving up from a Ka to an ex
Chris Birkbeck Puma for next season and plans to do the 26th
October Glandore based Skibbereen rally as a shakedown. John O’Leary,
who himself is contesting the Wales Rally GB in his Lancer, is
doing the preparation. Emily’s 18 year old brother Brian, who
has extensive karting experience, is driving the Ka on his first
rally in Skibbereen.
Magherafelt MC’s 12 stage Lanes Rally last Sunday was won by
Stephen Moore in his Subaru, with Greg McComick and Seamus
Donnelly 2nd and 3rd in their Escorts.
The 023 Tiles Southern Four Championship will go down to the
wire on the Skibbereen Rally, with Maurice Gass (Impreza WRC),
Liam McCarthy (Corolla WRC) and Denis Cronin (BMW M3) all capable
of taking the title.
