Irish
Notes 19th Nov. '03.
This year's Sligo Rally, directed by Clerk of the Course Robert
Lyttle and his wife Arenda, has been voted best rally of the
season by a cross section of those involved in the National
Tarmacadam Championship. The Sligo event was on an opt out year
from the Dunlop National Championship this year, but is back in
for 2004 and ironically is unlikely to be a round of the
Tarmacadam. The 2004 date is 10th/11th July.
James Cullen is the latest driver to enter for the 6th/7th
December Killarney Classic/Historic Stages Rally. Former multiple
Donegal International winner James will drive an Escort and joins
such luminaries as Jimmy McRae, Steve Perez and Dessie Nutt in
Porsches.
Further to our story of a couple of weeks ago that Passi Hagstrom
was coming to Belfast to compete in a 'full works' Subaru Impreza
WRC S9 over the weekend of 13/14th December, it transpire the
event is a Rally Time Trial. There will be 3 runs each day, on
the Saturday and Sunday, with no co-drivers. The event is being
organised by Mid Antrim MC and there will be forty invited
drivers. It is being held in conjunction with a motor show in the
Odyssey.
Well known Donegal lady Joan Gallagher has been appointed the new
Registrar for the Dunlop Irish National Rally Championship.
Joan is a highly respected member of the Donegal MC and has long
been associated with the Donegal International Rally.
Young Brian Armstrong co driven by Terence Teggart scored a
brilliant victory on last Saturday's Gullion Stages through the
Mourne Mountains. Armstrong had trouble with his Mk2 Escort
misfiring before the start, but it all came good over the day's
10 stages. Pat Donegan, also in an Escort, was 2nd.
Keith McQullian 3rd in his Honda Civic.
Former NI Rally Champion Denis Biggerstaff intends taking his
Metro 6R4 to the Galloway Hills Rally. Then on the following
weekend the Rally Time Trial in the Titanic Quarter at the
Odyssey in Belfast before taking the engine out and stripping it
down in an effort to find the reason behind the long standing
overheating problem.
