For Liam McCarthy and his co driver Kieran Murphy this was a real red letter day, winning their home Fastnet Rally and also clinching victory on the 023 Tiles southern 4 Championship. It was special as well for Alan Ring and Adrian Deasy to win group N in their Lancer after a great battle with Kevin & Martin Kelleher throughout the day. Last minute retirements included Bob Fowden/Jerry Hynes whose Subaru stopped on the final Mizen Head stage. Liam McCarthy has won this rally 3 times now, the first occasion 20 years ago in a 1600 Escort and then he won in a Metro 6R4. The Corolla WRC that he was driving today was as ever immaculately prepared by Derek McGeehan Motorsport. Liam commented when he brought the Toyota into the service area just before the West cork Hotel finish ramp. “It all went well, I was on eggshells a bit before the finish but it was good.” Kieran Murphy gave a nervous little laugh and said. “A double bonus to win the 023 Tiles as well”.

Alan Ring, co driven by Adrian Deasy who is very much on home soil here, said. “It was a great battle with Kevin during the day, very enjoyable, no big pressure. I got a bit agitated on the last stage when Bob Fowden’s Subaru stopped right in front of me.” Third placed Kevin Kelleher said. “It was a good fun day, very enjoyable, a good battle”. Jer O’Donovan overcame power steering problems with his Impreza to finish 3rd in GpN. James M Stafford had a great run throughout the rally to finish best 2 wheel drive and take class 13. While Washington James in a similar Darrian won class 14. Tommy Doyle had another great drive to win class 7 and finish in the top 10 in his Clio.

Aaron Burkart won class 6 for Super 1600s but he did drop out of the top 10 when he spun his Citroen C2 in stage 6. He was passed by James M Stafford and then his windscreen got covered in muck from the flying Darrian in front. Leonard Downey was the best placed of the Escorts. It is too early to tell as yet who is doing what in the Junior category but Billy McCarthy/John Falvey in their Micra were leading after their first stage and Ed Murphy was leading the Historic section.

Finally for now, very well done to Michael O’Riordan and all his team plus the huge contingent of volunteers necessary to make a rally like this happen. Our thanks to all who supported and helped with our Rally News service.
