The classic Ring stage was the opener for this 2012 West Cork Rally and Daragh O’Riordan set a time 17s faster than 2nd placed Colm Murphy with John Dalton 3rd, 6s behind Murphy’s GpN Impreza. When the cars went out to the 2nd stage, Inchy Bridge, they were greeted with hailstones. Daragh O’Riordan was fastest again but by just .9 of a second from Colm Murphy, and these two were quite a lot faster than the other top crews. John Cope was 3rd fastest but 24s down on that 10.5km 2nd stage. Daragh O’Riordan commented at first Clonakilty service. “That 2nd stage was very slippy. The car was pulling away everywhere.” Colm Murphy said. “I was full of the whole rack through the stage. I thought I was slow, but the time looks OK. I picked soft slick tyres for the loop and the car was a bit loose on the Ring stage but it paid off on stage 2”.
Alan Ring, in 7th after SS2, said. “The car is fine. I need to speed up”. John Dalton reported. “I was very brave on tyre choice. It didn’t pay off, I’m disappointed to have lost the time”. Damien McCarthy in the Hayes Caravans backed Civic has put in a startling performance so far to hold 4th o/a and lead class 11. His co-driver Eamon Hayes reported no problems with the car. Fergus O’Meara said that his state of the art Escort was very wandery on the straights last year. He has the front suspension geometry sorted and it is certainly showing in his times this morning. He is 5th o/a an leading cl.14. Leonard Downey/Mark Murphy had intercom battery problems on the first stage and then broke a wheel on their Escort with a slide into a ditch. They lost little time. Brian O’Keefe had some clutch slip on his GpN Impreza in the Ring stage but then it cleared itself and all is well.,
Wesley Patterson is driving his Historic type Ford Escort RS1800 today. The car does not have power steering and he is finding muscles in his shoulders he didn’t know existed. Eoghan Calnan, on his first rally for 12 months, spun his Escort in SS2, lost little time. John Buttimer is another who hasn't been out on a rally for a year and he is bedding himself in. David Guest is having some brake problems in his Civic and he is in 27th place o/a. Joe McGonigle is the fastest of the Citroen C2R2 Max runners so far. David Carney is 2nd, 11s back, despite a small misfire on his Citroen and highest seeded C2R2 Kevin O’Connor also has a misfire. Tom White’s Lancer (No.55) has lost 4th gear and he is struggling. Jason O’Mahony has crashed his Civic. The car was reportedly on its side but Jason and co driver Jonathan are OK, just hurt egos.
