With a lead of 1m42s Daragh O’Riordan/Tony McDaid in their Subaru Impreza WRC look very comfortable at the front of this Quality Hotel West Cork Rally ending Day 1. There is of course a long way to go. When Colm Murphy brought his GpN Impreza into the service area holding 2nd place, he said. “I’ve been trying to save the car over the last few stages. What we really need is some rain tomorrow. The dry weather is not good for this car so if you know anybody who could do a good Indian Rain Dance that would be good!” Daragh O’Riordan told us. “We’ve had a few little problems today. We have sorted most of them and hopefully the car will hold together tomorrow. The leak the car had earlier was a silicon hose weeping and that has been sorted. I can hear a noise in the back and will look at that in service now. Normally the car would have no problems”.
The crew that could still spring a surprise on this rally is John Dalton/Gwynfor Jones in their Darrian. They were 2nd fastest through stage 7, Ardfield 2, and have really got the bit between the teeth now. Welshman Dalton said. “I’m happy now. Tomorrow is a big day’s rallying and we will see what times we can do”. Fourth placed Damien McCarthy isn’t hanging about either. Damien and his co driver Eamon Hayes in their little Cl.11 Civic are a stunning 4th o/a. Damien told us that through the Ardfield stage he was on the rev limiter in 5th gear for a long while. The little Honda is strapped for top speed on that type of road. Still, Damien remains cool and his car is in A1 condition for Sunday’s long day’s rallying. John Cope/Alastair Wylie in their older model Subaru Impreza WRC is another crew who has gone extremely well today. Cope remarked at the finish of SS8. “Really enjoyed the stages today, it was very good”.
Fergus O’Meara/Diarmuid Lynch round off the top 6. O’Meara has made adjustments to the suspension of his Escort to suit the dry warm conditions and he was 18s faster through Ardfield on the 2nd run and said there is more to come from his Escort. Alan Ring said he had no issues with his Lancer but is disappointed with his position. John Hendy in 8th in his Corolla made a mess of one of the chicanes on the 2nd run through the Clonakilty spectator stage and he was one of the few top drivers who failed to beat the bogey. Kevin O’Donoghue in 9th reports all well in 9th as does Peter Lloyd in 10th. Leonard Downey/Mark Murphy are in 11th o/a and their Escort is using a litre of water per stage – which isn’t good! In the Citroen Racing Trophy after SS7 David Carney had got ahead of Joe McGonigle with Kevin O’Connor 3rd.
