Day 2 of this West Cork Rally and the opening stage, Ballinascarthy, consisting of 18.6km of lovely flowing roads stretching from Shannonvale outside Clonakilty and finishing in the shadow of the Pedlar’s Cross Pub brought some changes to the leaderboard. Rally leader Daragh O’Riordan was fastest but struggled somewhat. Colm Murphy, 2nd overnight, did not get started the stage as his GpN Impreza was stuck in 5th gear. Welshman Peter Lloyd started the stage in his Impreza WRC but there was no sign of him at the finish line.
When Daragh O’Riordan’s Subaru came to the end of the stage Daragh told us that the rear diff had been making banging noises and he had backed off for three quarters of the stage. He has another stage to do, the 19.8km Cloghagh test before service so hopefully the car keeps going. John Dalton was promoted to 2nd place on Colm Murphy’s retirement and the Darrian driver said at stage finish. “We’re not backing off.” Damien McCarthy now moves into an astonishing 3rd place in his 2 litre Civic and his co driver Eamon Hayes told us. “We went well, no problems but we are haemorrhaging top speed.” John Cope in 4th went into a right 9 square right a bit too hard and got his Subaru sideways and lost a few seconds.
Alan Ring seems to be out of sorts yesterday and certainly his times were middle of the road, but it is a different story this morning. His GpN Lancer was 3rd fastest through that stage that jumped him up several places on the leaderboard. Kevin O’Donoghue was in a bit of a lather at stage finish which was all down to a mix up at the start line. That mix up must have fired the Killarney man up as he did set a very good time, 7s faster than fellow Escort man Fergus O’Meara. Leonard Downey/Mark Murphy slipped a couple of places in their Escort, Leonard reported no problems but just didn’t set a good time. Wesley Patterson has sorted the gear change issue on his RS1800 Escort and he set a fabulous time through the stage.
In the Citroen Racing Trophy Joe McGonigle is shown as leading from David Carney with Kevin O’Connor 3rd.
There were 2 accidents on the rally yesterday where the crews were hospitalised. Peter Barrable/Dermot O’Gorman crashed into a wall in their Citroen while Paul Brown co driven by his daughter Jemma, crashed their Civic. All four were detained overnight for observation, we wish them a speedy recovery. On the overnight results John Hackett led the Historics in his Mini from David Cremin in his Mk1 Escort with Alan Courtney (Porsche 928) 3rd.
