The above leaderboards are from stage 9, Lisnamuck. We have just had a phone call from Derek McGarrity who is stranded in the middle of stage 10, Slieve Gallion. Derek told us. “That’s it. Our rally is over. No gears. After a square left and a square left it feels as if the spigot shaft has broken.” Looking back to stage 9 Darren Gass was fastest from Garry Jennings, Derek McGarrity was 3rd fastest. The action started even before the rally cars arrived at stage finish when Kenny McKinstry performed a feat of derring-do by rescuing a sheep trapped in a fence.

When Darren Gass’s Subaru stopped at stage finish Darren said. “It is still slippy in places. The car was misfiring at the start. We flicked the fuel pumps on and off. That cured it, which I don’t understand”. It seems a bit irrelevant now, but when McGarrity came in he reported the launch control on his Subaru had failed and he had lost 5-7s. Garry Jennings reported that his Subaru felt really good, at last it was well sorted and he was enjoying the rally. Daragh O’Riordan observed that it was a very technical stage and he enjoyed it, but couldn’t understand why his time wasn’t better. Robert Barrable felt that his Fabia S2000 was struggling in the power stakes up the hills in the stage.

In Rally NI Elfyn Evans was fastest on stage 9, 2s up on Keith Cronin. West Cork man Cronin had been caught out on a slippy right hander that had a wet patch. Keith’s Citroen clipped a bank. Damage would appear to be superficial. Elfyn Evans commented. “I’m just driving my own rally”. Jonny Greer’s Citroen indulged in a massive spin and got stuck between the banks about 4 miles into the stage. Osian Pryce picked too soft a compound tyre and reckons he needs a harder set up in the suspension department also. Tom Cave had a good run to move up another place. Mark Donnelly has still got clutch problems with the Clio. The timekeeper at the finish of stage 9, Peter Allen, ran alongside the car to collect the time card, so that Mark would not have to stop. Guy Wilks has his Twingo brakes sorted and set a good time. Finnish driver Jukka Korhonen commented. “No confidence in that stage”. Young Matthew Cathcart set a 4th fastest time on 9 which was really good. Retirements include: Chris Ingram following an accident on the Langford stage along the shores of Lough Neagh. Peter O’Kane cracked a gearbox on his Peugeot and now running in SuperRally. Desi Henry has reportedly put his Citroen off the road.

Tomas Davies was still leading the Historic Rally after stage 8 from Julian Reynolds and Ernie Graham – all in Escorts. Rob Smith in his Chevette was 4th. Keith McIvor was 5th and Will Onions 5th. Dessie Nutt was leading the older category in his Porsche. Wesley Patterson has dropped way back after being penalised over 5m for changing wheels in a control zone.
