The drivers have just completed the fabulous Lough Allua stage and with the bright sunny conditions, although there are still some damp patches under the trees, most of the top drivers said it was just brilliant. Rally leader Daragh O’Riordan now has a 2m buffer and although he reported a very small type of a spin in the narrow section of Kilnamatra he can now afford to just enjoy his home rally. Naturally Daragh is disappointed that Darren Gass had to retire. It transpires on further investigation that Darren’s Subaru went over a rock on stage 5 that broke the steering rack. The car spun and came to a halt on the next corner.

Declan Boyle is gradually upping his pace and is looking very solid in 2nd place, while Owen Murphy in 3rd, and also leading group N, is under no immediate threat. Murphy did say that his Lancer landed very heavily after a stage 6 jump and he thought something might have broken in the suspension, but all seems well. He also fitted new slick tyres for that loop of stages and said that they are so good he almost has too much grip. Sam Moffett told us that this was his first time over the Lough Allua stage in a competitive situation and he thought it was “very good”.

We reported that Frank Kelly fitted a spare gearbox at last service. Frank found quite a smell of burning gear oil through those last 2 stages and reckons there must be a leak somewhere. His co driver Liam Brennan commented. “At least we have 6 gears which is good!” Paraic Cummins is pushing hard in the National category in his Escort and said. “We woke up eventually!”

In the Citroen Racing Trophy David Carney continues to set the pace from Kieran Daly. Kevin O’Connor is 4th behind Steve Wood but Kevin only has to get to the finish this time and he has won the series.
