RALLY NEWS NO.2 Bantry/Sunday

The big news in from the tough opening 23km Mealagh Valley stage is that one of the pre-event favourites, Brian OMahony, has crashed out of the rally approximately 3km from the finish of the stage. Kenny McKinstry, who was running OMahony’s Subaru, reported. “The stage was bone dry earlier this morning and nearly all the drivers were on a dry weather cut slick tyre. Unfortunately the rain came in and the road is now wet, very slippery with shiny tar in places. We are only getting second-hand information so far but it would appear that the Subaru is up a bank and stuck.”

Presumably, and this has to be confirmed, because of the OMahony accident the top 13 drivers got a scratch time of 12.55. Cal McCarthy was 14th on the road and he was given a normal time of 14.04. Vincent OShea 14.11. Stephen Carey 14.19 and Patrick Cunningham 14.43.

News from yesterday about the Glens of Antrim Rally is that Derek McGarrity scored a narrow victory over Martin Cairns, just 2s separating the two Subarus at the end. The lead swapped back and forward throughout the day in a thrilling battle. Derek McGeehan was 3rd. This was Derek’s best result on gravel so far in the Mini WRC. Garry Jennings had a replacement engine fitted to his Subaru and the car farted and banged all day, but he managed to keep it going and finished 9th which was enough to clinch the Valvoline MI Forestry Rally Championship title.

The other contenders for the title had a mixed day. Vincent McAree slid his Lancer off the road on a tightening 6 left just after the start of the first stage. There was no damaged bu the car was stuck. Colin Britton lost time when his Lancer broke a drive shaft and he finished 12th. Stephen Wright finished 8th after a smooth run but it was not enough to take the title. Highest points scored was Desi Henry who was driving a Lancer and he finished 4th o/a. Frank Kelly was best 2 wheel drive on the day. Josh Moffett won Group N and was 7th o/a.
