On the second run over the Mealagh Valley stage Daragh O'Riordan set a scorching pace of 12m9s for the 23km stage, the road stretching from just outside Ballylickey towards Dunmanway and skirting the Mullaghmesha Mountain. Denis Cronin was 2nd fastest but 12s down on ORiordan and 3rd in the times was Michael OBrien in his Focus WRC. There was no time for Clonakilty man Kevin Kelleher who was joint 2nd o/a after stage 2. Kevin’s father Jim has just told us that there was a massive oil leak from the gearbox of their Subaru, and apart from doing further damage there was always the worry that the oil would have gone on to the catalytic converter part of the exhaust and caused a fire. So they have withdrawn from the rally and are looking forward to re-fettling the car for their home West Cork Rally next year.

Looking back to the times after stage 2 Wesley Patterson in his beautiful Mk2 Escort RS1800 came into 9th o/a and led class 13. Some other class leaders included Vincent OShea leading class 14 in his Escort. Andrew Mahon also in an Escort led class 11A and Stephen Carey led class 3 in his Civic.

John Hickey led class 15. John has resurrected an ex Colin McRae group A Impreza that has been in a container for 14 years and was driven on the Asia Pacific Championship a few times by Colin McRae. The car seems to be in really good condition although the brakes were seized up and are still a bit sticky. A further retirement is Paul and Thomas Brunton whose attractive yellow Civic has succumbed to a drive shaft failure. On our last RallyNews we had John Hendy in 9th which was our mistake, he was in 65th following his shock absorber/bracket problem. He has set a very good time in stage 3 and has moved up to 21st.
