Despite the myriad chicanes where stage 5, Vaughans Pass, runs along the edge of Bantry Town, Daragh ORiordan in his Subaru covered the 16.5km in just 9m 32s to set another fastest time. Denis Cronin was 7s slower and Michael OBrien, having made a mistake at a junction chicane was 19s down on Cronin, but still 3rd fastest. When Daragh ORiordan brought his Subaru into the windswept service area at Bantry Harbour he said. “That last stage was bone dry although the one before was wet. Overall it is all going well”. Denis Cronin commented that he had a problem with his Subaru windscreen fogging up in stage 4. Then he realised that he had switched off the heated front screen at service. After that all went well for the West Cork man.

Alan Ring continues to lead group N and reported that the new engine in his Lancer is going well and also “I can see now as well”. The latter comment referred to the moment he had with his contact lenses in stage 2. Brendan Cumiskey did lead GpN after the first couple of stages but dropped time in stage 3 when he hit the rear quarter panel of his Lancer an almighty swipe. There was some smoke from the damaged rear through stage 4 that knocked the Dundalk man off his stride a little. It transpired to be nothing to dramatic and he set a scorching time through 5, 13s up on Ring, in his efforts to get back into the GpN lead.

Damien McCarthy was disappointed to drop 2s to Alan Ring through Stage 5 that means the two are now trying for 4th place. Still, Damien is doing a fantastic job in his class 11 Civic. Perhaps though a wayward pheasant may not agree – it was plastered all over the front grille of the Honda! Jer ODonovan has not been rallying much recently but said here at service. “I am getting into it a bit now.” Jer is currently 3rd in Group N but still a few seconds off Ring and Cumiskey’s times.

Wesley Patterson is now the leading Escort and said he is really enjoying it, particularly now that the roads have dried up. Fergus OMeara still leads class 14 but has dropped behind Patterson in the race for best Escort. OMeara has a slight misfire in his car around the 5 thousand revs mark and also had an intercom problem through stage 5. Actually Fergus could not hear one word of the notes from co-driver Diarmuid Lynch. Cal McCarthy in the Honda had a puncture in stage 3 and dropped about a minute that has cost him a few places and he is now lying just outside the top 10. The Corolla of Alan Treacy is reportedly well off the road just after the start of SS5.
