RALLY NEWS NO.2 Tralee/Service/Sunday
UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 1 Headley`s Bridge
1st (2) Declan Boyle/Brian Boyle (Impreza WRC) 9.15.9
2nd (7) Donagh Kelly/Kevin Flanagan (Impreza WRC) 9.18.7
3rd (4) Kenny McKinstry/Kenny Hull (Impreza WRC) 9.46.7
4th (6) Kevin Barrett/Sean Mullally (Impreza WRC) 9.53.5
5th (9) Frank Kelly/Stephen Quinn (Escort) 9.58.7
The above times are from the first few cars only……more to follow.
As most of the rally cars were getting tucked into parc ferme here at the Carlton Hotel last night No.1 seed Thomas Fitzmaurice was out at his TLI base where the mechanics worked furiously at his Subaru gearbox. It was to no avail. Last year`s winner Fitzmaurice is a non-starter today. This has left Donegal man Declan Boyle to set the pace closely pursued by another Donegal driver Donagh Kelly.
Kenny McKinstry who was 3rd fastest commented at stage finish. `The roads are dry, no problems with the stage. We did have a small moment at Headleys Bridge but that does not count for the huge time gap between me and Boyle and Kelly. I do not know what they are on, but they are certainly going hard`. Of course it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Not that we are suggesting that Kenny is old, but he did say last night following a test drive in his recently acquired Impreza WRC S14 that he always finds it tough to adjust to left-hand drive. Kevin Barrett was caught in the stage by Donagh Kelly and he pulled over to let Donagh through so that probably cost Kevin a couple of seconds.
