Fastest on the opening two stages was Declan and Brian Boyle in their Subaru who lead the rally here at service by just over 11s from Donagh Kelly & Kevin Flanagan. Kenny McKinstry/Kenny Hull are 3rd but over a minute back. Declan Boyle commented at service In control. `The road was wild loose and slippy in places. We picked too hard a compound tyre`. Donagh Kelly reported that he was not pushing too hard and all was well with his Subaru. Kenny McKinstry is still settling in to his new left hand drive Impreza S14. Although he is having a small problem with the launch control of the car he is not offering that as any form of excuse for not being on the pace of the 2 men in front. Similarly 4th placed Kevin Barrett told us. `I am just not at it. It is so long since I competed on tarmac`.

Behind the top four it is then a battle between the top group N cars of Eugene Meegan, Stephen Hernan and Alan Ring. Not too far away is young James Laverty and he reckons he may perhaps be closer to the race in front as his co-driver Francis Regan feels that his time for stage 2 was 10s out. Meegan commented `We had a spin at a junction and a bit of a misfire, otherwise OK1. Shane Maguire told us he picked too soft a tyre as he was expecting the rain to sweep in. The road however stayed dry, although the rain has now arrived. Alan Ring was having to hold his Lancer back having changed to Carless fuel and it has altered the mapping on the engine and it is `racing`. Stephen Hernan lost a little time when he caught and had to pass 2 cars in SS2.

Frank Kelly is the best of the Escorts so far and Frank was another driver to remark about the gravel in stage 2 and he said. `It is frustrating. We are getting lots of wheel spin and are having to keep up the gears. At least the diff has freed up a bit and we are quite happy`. Just outside the top 10 John McQuaid is 11th in his Escort. Frank Sweeney is 12th in his Escort and David Murphy 13th (Escort). Pat Kelly is 14th and having a good run and Ed Synan is 15th despite a stage 1 puncture. Other stories include – Charlie Hickey is getting used to his new Escort and is in 24th kplace. John Hickey stopped in stage 1 to check that Brendan Cumiskey was OK when his Citroen went into a ditch. Hickey thinks that Cumiskey got going again.
