Unfortunately at the end of stage 3, Headley`s Bridge, Declan & Brian Boyle have crashed their Subaru out of the lead. This happened at a square right junction following a 400-yard straight and Declan explained. `The wipers went and I misjudged the square right corner. The car hit side on and fell on to its roof and then back on to its wheels. There is a lot of panel damage but we are both OK and will live to fight another day`. This left Donagh Kelly with a lead of well over a minute over Kenny McKinstry with Kevin Barrett 3rrd and Alan Ring 4th. Conditions for the drivers had become very difficult with the onset of rain and rally leader Donagh Kelly told us that his Subaru was dancing about all over the road and he was on hard slick racing tyres which was the wrong choice.

Kenny McKinstry is having a few issues with his Subaru stalling but otherwise OK. Kenny set fastest time in stage 4. Kevin Barrett said. `The roads are like a bottle out there, damp and greasy`. Alan Ring set a very good time in stage 3 but then lost quite a few seconds in 4 when his Lancer skidded into a farmyard. Alan told us he was lucky that the front wheels did not go into a ditch and he was able to back out and get away without losing too much time and hold on to the group N lead. Stephen Hernon was up to 3rd in group N and 7th o/a but he has crashed his Impreza. Stephen and his co-driver Jeff Case are OK but the car is gong no further today. Ed Synan stopped to make sure the crew was OK so Ed lost a bit of time, but he is well down the classification anyway following his stage 1 puncture. Eugene Meegan holds 2nd GpN and said after SS4 that they tyres on his Lancer were just not working in these conditions.

James Laverty lost a bit of ground on stage 4 when his Impreza slid into the scenery and cost him quite a few seconds. Despite a major 6th gear moment over a crest Frank Kelly continues to lead the Escorts, over 20s ahead of John McQuaid in a similar Ford.

In the Junior category of the rally after 2 stages Richard Moore/William Kehoe reported that their Civic is going well and they have had a clear run so far. Darren Young/Sean Walsh are 2nd in their Civic and Patrick Lawlor/Cain Dineen, also in a Civic, are 3rd. Lawlor explained that he had a few small moments and a visit to a ditch or two, and glad to be still going. Frank Sweeney was another Escort man to lose some time when he went sightseeing up at the graveyard in stage 4.
