This Monaghan event is a real landmark in Irish rallying with a new name on the roll of honour – 22 year old Sam Moffett co-driven by James O`Reilly have scored a historic victory. Their achievement is even more significant in that Sam had never driven a world rally car before, let alone an Impreza WRC S14. Some wag in the team put an L plate on the front of Sam`s Subaru. He is certainly a quick learner. He admitted to being a bundle of nerves for the last stage but delighted to have taken the victory. Three times former National Champion Niall Maguire, co-driven by Enda Sherry, came through strongly on the second half of the rally to take runner-up spot and provisionally to have moved into the lead of the Dunlop National Championship. Sam Moffett will almost certainly be second in the series when the points are totted up later. Darragh O1Riordan/Tony McDaid finished 3rd in their Fiesta WRC and that was quite an achievement as Darragh was really unwell throughout the day. Still, it has been good for Darragh to get stage miles under his belt in the new car.
James Belton came through well in the 2nd half of the day to achieve 4th. Roy White has won class 20 with his 5th overall despite losing time when his MG S2000 broke a driveshaft. There was a great battle for Group N supremacy and Donegal crew Martin Doherty/Damien McAuley have just pipped Josh Moffett/John Rowan for the honours.
There was disappointment at the end for Frank Kelly & Liam Brennan who slid their Escort off the road into a field on the final stage. They were 5th overall starting the stage and leading the highly competitive class 14. Gary McPhillips was making a race of it with Frank but his Escort stopped with alternator trouble and Daniel McKenna went out on the 2nd stage of the day when his Escort got caught in a patch of mud and clipped a tree. The reason for the retirement of Darren Gass was. `No wipers, no intercom, and a window steamed up!` Yes, the showers were heavy when they came.
Finally for now well done to all in Monaghan MC for promoting such a really good rally once again. A special mention must go to Cora Maguire, Paul Hughes and Ronnie Hawe.
