2nd (2) Derek McGarrity/James McKee (Focus WRC) 8.06.0
3rd (4) Kevin Barrett/Sean Mullally (Impreza WRC) 8.25.1
4th (3) Derek McGeehan/Michael Orr (Mini WRC) 8.27.4
The above times are from the first few cars only. Indeed the stage was halted after 4 cars. Camillus Bradley/Danny O’Neill were the next crew due through the stage but we have no word as yet as to exactly why the stage has been stopped.
Darren Gass is on his home patch for this event but he admitted that where the first 2 stages are located, Black Hill and Deadman’s Hill, he would not be familiar with the roads. Still, Tarmac Champion Darren was fastest on that opening stage but was not happy and said at stage finish. “The car is all over the road, set far too low. I will have to get the suspension raised and get more travel.” There was a chunk knocked out of a rear left wheel on Darren’s Subaru but he had no idea that he had hit anything, although as he said himself, the car was so much all over the road it could have hit anything.
When Derek McGarrity brought his newly acquired Focus into the finish of the stage he reported that the car seemed good, but he was slowed with intermittent intercom problems. Just the same as he had on the Galway Rally earlier this year. Kevin Barrett reported the stage as “very tricky”. Derek McGeehan in his Mini WRC said. “I was very cautious. The stage is so narrow and the car so nervous I didn’t want to clip a wheel”.
