Darren Gass continues to lead the rally but had a close escape on stage 5 when his Subaru had a big spin. This mishap cost Darren around 20s and allowed Derek McGarrity to set fastest time. Otherwise Gass is pleased with the way things are going and says the car is fine. Derek McGarrity had his share of dramas on stage 3 when his Focus kept stalling. He had a good run through 5 and 6 but starts the final loop of 3 stages 51s behind Gass.

Paddy McVeigh continues to hold 3rd place and indeed has created quite a stir with his performance today. Paddy is an under-stated sort of guy and said before the start that he really just wanted to get the Subaru around the course. He is certainly doing a lot better than that. He did though had a hiccup in stage 5 when he stalled the car and in stage 6 ran wide at one corner and the Impreza collected a fair bit of mud on the front spoiler. Kevin Barrett has turned in a couple of really good times through stages 5 and 6 to put some fresh air between himself and Derek McGeehan in the race for NI Championship points. McGeehan commented that his Mini WRC is going “grand”. Then added. “Its just me, I don’t want to go off”.

In the ongoing race for “best Escort” Frank Kelly and David Armstrong are swapping seconds with each stage. The gap is now down to less than 2s with 3 stages remaining. David Armstrong commented. “I have a whole new set up with the Escort. You would think it was a different yoke”. Keith White is the next best Escort but admitted. “Going well but can’t keep up with these guys in front”. Adrian Hetherington was ahead of White but his Escort has stopped in SS5 with a broken clutch.

By our unofficial tally Rory Byrne leads Group N in the Modern Tyres Lancer and that is despite a slight misfire at high revs. Damien Toner has lost some time in stage 6 when his Lancer suffered some sort of mechanical problem at the rear, could be a drive shaft or a link bar broken. Jim Feenan has stopped in stage 4, the Formula Karting man reporting rear wheel damage on his Escort WRC. Paul Barrett has retired his Lancer having overshot a hairpin and then broken the transmission trying to get back on course. Norman Armstrong has fitted new rear tyres to his Escort and set good times through the middle loop and said it made a big difference. Alan Nesbitt is still in differential trouble with his Escort but is setting good times and like Norman Armstrong is just outside the top 10. There was no sign of Ray Brammer here at service.
