Garry Jennings has shrugged off the problems with the Subaru engine to set a stunningly fastest time through the daunting Sloughan Glen stage to maintain his lead in the rally. Garry had led the rally by almost a minute from Derek McGarrity but then a 30s penalty reduced that to haslf a minute, but Garry promptly established status quo by recording a time 29s better than the Focus behind. McGarrity was slowed when his casr went up an escape road at the final junction in the stage. There were barriers and tapes flying over the bonnet of his Ford, and any chance of making a challenge for the lead disappeared in those few lost seconds. In the Jennings camp they have done everything they can with the engine and it is just cross the fingers time now that the car makes it to the finish.

That Sloughan Glen stage was dry for most of the way but then very wet towards the end, and even Osian Pryce, leader in the BRC section, had an overshoot and a stall at that junction. Mark Donnelly was fastest through the stage and suddenly it was like turning on a light switch – from a mediocre run this year since his switch to the turbo charged Citroen, it has suddenly come good for Mark. It is as if he has overcome his natural tendency to be mechanically sympathetic, and just screw the last ounce out of the car. Interestingly, he said. `It really feels comfortable.

In the National Rally after stage 10 Frank Kelly led by just 3s from Derek McGeehan with Shane McGirr 3rd but with his Starlet engine sounding a bit rough. Fergus O`Meara was 4th despite ignition problems. Jonny Leonard 5th and Chris Armstrong 6th. Anthony Cairns retired his Subaru with differential trouble. Galway`s Dean Rafferty with West Cork girl Aileen Kelly co driving in his Honda Civic led the Challenge category after stage 9, Widow Magee, by 11s from Ross Hunter/Josh Davison in their Peugeot 205. Third is Russ Thompson/Andy Murphy (Clio). Rafferty fitted new brake discs and pads to his Civic overnight and is going well today.
