There may have been blue skies over the Boggeragh Mountains beside the opening Knockakilla stage out of Millstreet, but nearly all the drivers reported slippy, damp, greasy roads. AS can be seen above, Donegal crew Declan and Brian Boyle were fastest overall. Donagh Kelly in 2nd place reported an ongoing concern over his Focus WRC launch control but otherwise OK. Garry Jennings was flustered at stage finish as he told of his Subaru dumping its water in the stage, and the car sounded fairly unhealthy. Daragh O`Riordan was also not a happy man as he could not get his tyres to work over the opening miles of the stage. His co driver Tony McDaid commented. `A bad run`.
Colm Murphy was the fastest of the group N runners and the Limerick man said at stage finish. `No grip but exciting`. Welsh visitor Seb Ling had a very good run to be just a few seconds down on Colm Murphy and a few up on Owen Murphy. Owen admitted to being slightly cautious with his tyre choice. Sam Moffett seemed to be in some sort of trouble with his Lancer. He had clipped the back of the car and the exhaust was trailing the ground. Sam was 17s down on Owen Murphy.
Some other International times included – Stephen Wright recorded a 9.40.6 and he said. `It was very slippy. I am just glad to get through the first stage`. Kevin Kelleher was slightly disappointed to have only recorded a 9.44.9. Josh Moffett reckoned he had made too brave a tyre choice and his time was 9.54.7.
In the National Rally Roy White/Liam Brennan lead in their MG S2000 but Roy said he was not committed enough. Phil Collins was best Escort and he reported `a clean run, no dramas`. Frank Kelly lost time when he spun his Escort at a junction. Wesley Patterson was less than half a second off Kelly and he said he found the stage slippy but otherwise OK.
