Fastest through stages 2 and 3 was last year`s Cork 20 winner Daragh O`Riordan in his Fiesta WRC. Daragh was a second or two up on Declan Boyle on each of those 2 stages. Boyle stole a march on everyone of course on the opening stage and still leads the rally by almost 19s. Declan was not quite as impressive on stages 2 and 3 mainly because he had fitted a new type of brake pad to his Impreza WRC and the brakes were making the weirdest of noises, that knocked his confidence. O`Riordan told us that was just simply asleep on the first stage and had no confidence and now it is all coming together. Garry Jennings in 3rd place still has a niggling worry about his Subaru losing water, and then of course the ECU is trying to click into safe mode. In overall terms through Garry is determined not to get sucked into a major battle, and stay focussed on his hopes for winning the Tarmac Championship. Donagh Kelly, by his own high standards, had a slightly disappointing time through stage 4 and is not quite sure why.
Fastest Group N through stage 3, the classic Mullaghanish, was Owen Murphy/James O`Brien, albeit by just over a second from Colm Murphy and Seb Ling. Owen told us that he not been out on a tarmac rally for a while and it has him a little time to settle in. Colm Murphy still leads group N and he joked at the service in control. `The car is still going and we are still smiling!` Seb Ling is not doing so much rallying these days but he is certainly going well today, although he did lose a second or two when he caught and passed the struggling Josh Moffett Lancer in stage 3. Young Josh has had a rotten rally so far. In stage 1 he was on the wrong tyres. On stage 2 his Lancer turbo pipe blew off on a bumpy straight and in stage 3 the car sustained a flat tyre. Stephen Wright is another with one eye on the Tarmac Championship and he is pushing hard where it is comfortable and not driving too aggressively where it is difficult or dangerous. Sam Moffett`s Lancer ran the last two stages with half the exhaust missing, so Sam switched off the anti lag just in case the car went on fire underneath.
Roy White continues to lead the National Rally although his MG S2000 suffered an alternator failure in stage 3 that then affected the electric power steering. Frank Kelly`s Escort went on to its roof on a square right, square left over gravel at the flying finish of stage 3. Wesley Patterson stopped to make sure that Frank and his co driver Stephen Quinn were OK. Which they were. Wesley lost a few seconds.
