Damp and misty conditions greeted the drivers as they tackled the Caherbarnagh and Shamrock Bridge stages. Aidan Harper in the Spectator Control Range Rover reported that despite the inclement conditions the standard of marshalling and organisation on the stages was of the same excellent standard as Day 1. Donagh Kelly in his Focus WRC was fastest on the opening stage and then Daragh O1Riordan took his Fiesta WRC to quickest time on the Shamrock Bridge test. O`Riordan reported the conditions as treacherous and his co driver Tony McDaid said. `It is an Irish day, so many different road conditions that no one tyre would be correct`. Garry Jennings reckoned he was too ambitious in his tyre choice and he was just a second or two off the pace on each of the two stages. Following his great run through stage 8 Donagh Kelly`s Focus gave more launch control difficulties and then Donagh put one wheel in a ditch briefly on a 6 right 6 left sequence. When Kevin Kelleher came into service he said. `My nerves are shot. I was too brave in my tyre choice.`
Owen Murphy lost the group N lead to Sebastian Ling on stage 8 when he had a very big moment on a shiny tar junction. Owen said. `It made a boy of me for the rest of the stage`. Sam Moffett was another who was a bit brave in his tyre choice. Stephen Wright is still concentrating on the Tarmac Championship and doing just enough to keep a fair chunk of fresh air between himself and Josh Moffett.
Declan Boyle was due to start 10th on the road this morning but he would appear to have withdrawn following yesterday`s time loss. There was also no sign of Colm Murphy on this morning`s start list. Colm had led GpN yesterday but then lost several minutes with a broken rim on his Impreza.
In the National Rally Roy White/Liam Brennan took up where they left off yesterday by setting very dominant times, their lead now over 3m on Wesley Patterson. Wesley said he is revving his Escort far too high and would be better off up a gear, but he loves the noise it is making! Jim McKenna was 3rd in the Nationals overnight but he is losing time with a burst front suspension unit on his Escort. Jason Ryan has had a good run this morning in his Starlet. Phil Collins has also gone well and is determined to get on to the podium having lost a couple of minutes yesterday when his Escort suffered a 2m puncture. John Hickey rounds off the top 6 in the Nationals and he said that the steering rack of his Escort 4x4 is `nearly on fire from opposite locking`. Damien McCarthy had alternator problems this morning in his Civic that added to yesterday`s puncture has made it a difficult rally for the West Cork man.
Frank Kelly rejoined under Super Rally rules this morning but his Escort is parked up with a broken brake pipe in SS8.
