THESE ARE JUST THE FIRST FEW PROVISIONAL AND UNOFFICIAL TIMES.

No.1 seed Daragh O1Riordan celebrated his 32nd birthday today by having a good clean run over the opening stage in his Fiesta WRC. Fastest was Welshman Hugh Hunter with a stunning time in his Subaru, 19s faster than Daragh. Equally amazing was the performance of Donegal man Declan Gallagher in his rwd Starlet and he set the second fastest time. Daragh O1Riordan almost did not have such a happy birthday. He took his Fiesta WRC out for a short run last night as a shakedown and the car broke a rear driveshaft, and that is a tough job to fix on the Fiesta. Anyway, the task was completed and Daragh reported the car going well this morning, but he himself was not settled. On top of that, the nature of that 14.27km opening test would not be ideal for the Fiesta as against the big Subarus. It is a power stage, very fast along the coat and then up over the top of the hill on the headland.

Hugh Hunter commented at stage finish. `I enjoyed that.` Roy White in his MG S2000 said. `We took no risks. It went well`. Wesley Patterson observed. `The fast section at the start was quite shiny tar and we were a little cautious, after that it was fine`. Another driver who said he was a bit cautious was young English visitor Dan O`Brien. When his Focus WRC came into the stop control he said. `It went OK. We were a bit cautious on the narrow road towards the end. We are still bedding ourselves in`.

Some other stories from the first stage included: Anthony O`Halloran in his Manta 400 is having intercom problems. The Ruan man said. `It was like talking into a bucket`. John Hendy smelt gear oil from his BMW at stage start that knocked him out of his stride, although happily the smell seems to dissipate during the stage. Vincent O`Shea`s Escort broke the starter motor leaving service so Vincent was being very careful not to overshoot or stall the car.
