Following a rally lay-off for some time it has been a marvellous return to the stages today for Ballylickey`s Denis Cronin and his co-driver Coleman Hurley to take victory in their Subaru Impreza WRC on this classic Fastnet Stages Rally. Denis Cronin is now one of the very few people to have won the rally 3 times. His first victory came in 1994 in an Ascona 400 and then in 2009 in an Impreza WRC. He took the lead on stage 3 and despite some intercom problems in stage 4 held it to the end. Daragh O`Riordan/Tony McDaid made some suspension changes to their Fiesta WRC, putting in longer front springs and altering the strut set up, and their times improved throughout the day keeping the pressure on Denis Cronin, but were unable to get ahead of the flying Subaru. There could be only one winner of course but it was a shame for Daragh that he did not secure a hat-trick of Fastnet wins on this, his birthday, today.

It was a big achievement for Roy White/James O`Brien today by bringing their MG S200 into 3rd o/a that also secures 3rd overall place on the Dunlop National series. They displace Josh Moffett from 3rd but Josh still wins the overall GpN Dunlop title. Donegal men Declan Gallagher & his co-driver Ryan Moore produced one of the drives of the rally to take 4th o/a in their rear wheel drive Starlet. For their efforts they win the Dunlop C/ship rally.ie 2 wheel drive Award. Their closest rival was Jonathan Pringle/Martin Byrne but they uncharacteristically crashed their Escort on SS7. They sustained no serious injuries. One of the other big Championship matters to be decided today was the winner of the Plasticbags.ie Southern 4 series and provisionally that would appear to be going to Lisburn man Wesley Patterson, who finished 5th o/a today.

Finally for now very well done to Ger Hayes and his Skibbereen & District Car Club team for organising such a challenging, enjoyable classic rally today. Many thanks to everyone who supported and helped with our RallyNews service, particularly the Bantry Development and Tourism Association. Mick Cremin and Martin Walsh were particularly helpful in the arrangements for RallyNews – thank you both. And of course thanks to Dougie for all his help.
