Sam Moffett, co driven by James O`Reilly, has powered his Fiesta WRC to fastest times on the opening 3 stages of this Monaghan Stages Rally, to lead by 21s from Peadar Hurson here at first service. Daniel McKenna has moved from 5th up to 3rd through stages 2 and 3 to hold the `best Escort` Tag. When Sam Moffett reached service here at Monaghan town centre he said. `The car is very good, all fine`. Peadar Hurson told us that he felt a bit rusty to start but he is getting it together and he has made no mistakes which is a big thing. Peadar said that his Escort Cosworth seems to be misfiring slightly for the first half mile of each stage and then it clears. Daniel McKenna feels there is a slight vibration in his Escort`s back axle but otherwise all OK. Paddy McVeigh lost time when he overshot a square right junction and said he did not know what he was thinking of. As well as that, along with several other drivers, Paddy seemed to pick a too soft a compound rubber and of course the temperature is now soaring.
Kevin Barrett has improved through stage 3. He admitted that he felt a bit rusty to start but the feeling was coming back through the Ardaghy stage. Josh Moffett was more or less on home territory through stage 3 and set a sizzling time in his Group N Lancer. Shane Maguire in his GpN Lancer feels there is a wee noise coming from the back of the car but does not want to say too much about it as he reckons it could be as much in his head as anything! On the subject of the Maguire family, we said on the last RallyNews that his father Niall had to miss the rally as he had hurt his foot – but we forgot to give Niall his name!
Adrian Hetherington was into the top 10 through the first 2 stages but his Escort developed a sudden power steering problem in stage 3 and took a trip over a hedge into a field. He got the car on to the road again and only dropped about a minute. Michael Curran is having a problem with the gear change sticking on his Escort but admits that it could be the driver.
