The big news in from stage 5, Caherlistrane, is that Niall Maguire has crashed his Subaru on a slippy and muddy square left corner and is out of the rally. Niall and his co driver Paul McLaughlin are reported to be OK. That more or less spells the end of their Dunlop National Championship aspirations, although of course this rally isn’t quite over yet. Patrick Elliott still has to get to the finish. When Cavan man Patrick brought his Impreza into the control he said. “This is not a nice way for the championship to be decided. I feel sorry for Niall. There were lots of slippy patches out there. It is hard for me now to judge the pace. I will have to sort my head here at service and get it all together”. Welshman Melvyn Evans and his co driver Sean Mullally were first on the scene of Niall’s accident and they took time to stop and make sure the crew was OK. Melvyn certain found it a bit difficult to get going after that but as he said himself. “In a way we are just plodding on now anyway, I’m never going to catch Patrick”. Melvyn also said of making another mess of his tyre choice, he picked a hard slick tyre and when he got out to the stages they were damp following a sudden rain shower.

Alan Ring continues to lead group N and he is finding it a little difficult to judge the pace, he doesn’t want to go too hard and risk everything. Alan also had some intercom troubles. Maurice Moffett leads the 2 wheel drive contingent and he is trying to keep his Starlet very smooth and preserve his tyres. Martin McGee was off the road briefly at a square right corner and has lost a few seconds to Moffett in the race for best 2 wheel drive. McGee damaged the door of his Escort, it had to be co driver Damien Crawford’s side of course, when he went off on a square right. Mike Bird lost time when he put his Subaru up an escape road, his total now 41.58. Father and son team Daragh and Dean Rafferty are now having gearbox troubles with their Subaru and losing time. Danny McBride has found the little fault in his Lancer engine which was causing a misfire. It was a pipe to the fuel sensor had come loose and he is upping the pace, but still a bit shy of Ring’s speed.

Sean Flanagan is right in the group N hunt, just 5s behind McBride and 3rd in group N. Brian Duggan in the hot seat of that gpN Impreza and pointed at the damaged doors and said. “He keeps trying to take the chicanes in 4th gear”. Trevor Bustard put his Lancer into a field in stage 4 and then had an overshoot in stage 6 as he tried too hard to make up time. Trevor is not totally out of the pictures but his total now is 41.43. Fergal Costello had an overshoot in stage 4 but worse was to follow when he crashed his Lancer into a wall on stage 5 and is out of the rally. Tom Curley clipped one of the water divider thingies with the rear of his Lancer in stage 6, otherwise going well. Eugene Ferry is settling down well now and his total is 42.01. Anthony Hand is on 42.13 and he leads class 11. Mike Quinn is on 41.24 and his tyres have gone off slightly. Ian Roche leads the Super 1600 class in his Clio. Tommy Doyle leads class 7 in his 2 litre Clio. Liam Egan is 42nd in his Lancer and running fairly trouble free. Jack Maguire seems to have retired his Escort Cosworth. Jack was in the top 10.
