Stage 3, The Glens, 31.21km long and an amalgamation of the Glendun, Orra Lodge and Torr Head stages, was tipped to be a real test of man and machine. So it has transpired. Many drivers have stopped in the stage, most notable amongst them Elfyn Evans in his Fiesta. The Welshman was leading the rally after stage 2 but his Fiesta has reportedly succumbed to a steering problem. Craig Breen was sensationally fastest in the stage, 24s up on Polish driver Kajetanowicz. Breen commented. ‘That is the best bit of tarmac in the world’ Kajetan, or KK as he is also known, said. ‘Ok the stage is dry but I make mistake with tyres, they were for the wet. It was difficult for the driver and the co-driver.’ Alastair Fisher was just 3s down on the flying European Champion. Alistair admitted that he had cooked his tyres in the stage. Other drivers who have hit trouble include Frenchman Robert Consani in his Citroen. Desi Henry dropped from 5th o/a to 12th in that stage 3.
Joe McGonigle reported his tyres losing their grip and he was off the road 4 times, but still going and in 11th place. Neil Simpson has reportedly put his Skoda off the road in Glendun. Della Casa crashed his Citroen in front of Tom Cave at junction 3 in Glendun. Cave said he is much happier with his car and is working his way through suspension set-ups. Aleks Humar in the Peugeot has stopped in SS3. Matt Edwards in the Lancer failed to make the start line when something went wrong with his car. Car No.24 Chuchala still leads R2 category with his Subaru from Gryazin (Peugeot 208) and Griebel 3rd in his Opel Adam. Chris Ingram is 28th and 5th RC2. Robert Woodside is going quite well in his Fiesta R5 despite a few niggly problems and he is lying 13th. Euan Thorburn is 14th: Koltun is 15th: Max Vatanen 16th and Stephen Wright, worried about a down on power engine in his Fiesta engine, is 17th.
In the National Rally after stage 1 Derek McGarrity in his Fiesta WRC led by 10s from Frank Kelly in his Escort. Ollie Mellors in his Proton was breathing down Frank’s neck. Wesley Patterson was 4th, Alistair Cochrane 5th and Paul Killen 6th. Blomberg in his new Mitsubishi R5 is lying 20th. We have heard reports that stage 2 is not running for the National Rally.
