Please note: Derek McGarrity/Barry McNulty (Fiesta WRC) finished on a total stage time of 30m43.1s but they are subject to a 10m road penalty.

When Marty McCormack and his co-driving niece Caron finished the final stage of this rally Marty nearly burst with excitement and he said. ‘It has been a childhood dream of mine to win the Tour of the Sperrins, I can hardly believe it has happened. I am absolutely delighted’ Second placed Derek McGeehan, who also sponsored the rally, brought his Mini WRC safely into the stage finish and he said. ‘I enjoyed the day although it was difficult. I had a few big moments in the slippy conditions. On that last stage the car really got away from me on a hairpin left into a 6 left’ Derek was co-driven by Arthur Kierans. Michael Carbin was another to have a good result and that was despite his Lancer breaking a shock absorber on the last stage. Michael’s result today will do him no harm as regards the Valvoline National Forestry championship. Dundalk man Brendan Cumiskey with Ronan O’Kane co driving in his Fiesta R5 seemed to be heading for 3rd o/a but a road penalty has knocked the crew back to 7th. Niall Devine/Crawford Henderson had a great run in their Subaru to take 4th o/a and Group N honours. Simon Woodside/Stephen Dowds finished 2nd group N with their Lancer.

Shane McGirr, co driven by Liam McIntyre in his Starlet was the best 2 wheel drive finisher and Shane chuckled at the finish when he said. ‘That was all a bit hairy in there’. Oran Donnelly had led the 2wd contingent earlier but his Escort stopped with differential failure. David Crossen had a great run to 2nd best 2wd with John Gordon 3rd and Mickey Conlon 4th.

Finally for now well done to all at Magherafelt Motor club under the direction of CoC Alan Bolton for putting on such a fine rally today. It was a shame about the wet and slippery conditions, but there is nothing anyone can do about that. Commiserations to all those competitors who slid off the road and top marks to those to made the finish. Our thanks to everyone who supported and helped with the Rally News service.
