There was a short break between stages 3 and 4 while the North Armagh Club changed the stage around to run in a different direction. This allowed the Trialstar Motor Bike team to strut their stuff When the rally action resumed a hint of sunshine and a reasonably strong wind had dried the tracks out well, but still the drivers found it extremely slippy and greasy. Garry Jennings was first over the stage and he also reported a slight struggle over a new section of gravel, and he thought with his Subaru cleaning the line it would be an advantage to those behind. However, the times told a different story. Garry was the only driver to break the 2m barrier, his actual time 2m57.4s. Declan Boyle was 2nd fastest on 2m2s. Kenny McKinstry was disappointed with a 2m03.2s. Garry said after the finish of the stage ‘I was trying to be fast and safe. The oil pressure looks OK’ Kenny McKinstry tried a cut slick dry weather tyre and for the first half of the stage it was very marginal. Declan Boyle reported no problems and Derek McGeehan said ‘I was comfortable enough’. Derek McGarrity said he made a hash of the final hairpin.
In the battle of the Mk2 Escorts Damien Toner was again the fastest man, several seconds up on Keith White. Both Frank Kelly and Adrian Hetherington had very big moments and lost time. Frank said he had to reverse his Escort out of the trees and commented. ‘That’s what you get for trying too hard’. Adrian Hetherington said he had 2 big spins between the trees and he was so disgusted he didn’t even give us his time! However, he lost at least 40s. The main thing is there was no damage and no one was hurt. Alan Smyth had opened up a 4s gap to his class 2 rival Kyle White after stage 3, but on stage 4 Kyle carved a couple of those seconds back. Young Dunmurry man Kyle said ‘We did had a few big moments and I think it is time to think of getting this little Citroen home in one piece’.
On World Rally Championship Rally Poland – Ott Tanak leads from Andreas Mikkelsen by 18s with New Zealand driver Haydon Paddon 3rd in his Hyundai 6s back. In the race between Lefebvre and Breen – the French driver still has the edge, almost 12s up on Breen following the 13th stage.
